creativity

I was visiting friends at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi recently when I met this young man towing a piece of cardboard on a string. He is proud of his hand-fashioned pull-car, so I ask if I can take his picture.  Standing tall, he strikes a pose that displays his creation to advantage and stares unflinchingly into the camera.

I look at this photo often, wondering at the strength I see in those eyes. I wonder what his life was like before violence drove him from his home. I wonder how he manages to keep creativity alive and what he will make next out of bits and pieces of this and that. I pray that God will give him a future and a hope.
